It is so easy to be discouraged about the negative things that happen. Maybe you’re dealing with some health issues, or having trouble with family members. These things seem to demand our attention every day. However, if you are willing to make the effort, it can become just as easy to recognize the positives in your life and be grateful.
Why is it that many of us expend so much energy on what is wrong as compared to what is going well in our world? It is one thing to recognize the positives, but yet an entirely different thing to be grateful for them.
There are two components of being a happier more fulfilled person. One is awareness and the other is gratitude for what you recognize.
Awareness – Recognize the Positives
One of the best ways to increase your happiness is to purposefully look for things to be happy about. This can take some self-discipline, especially if you have a tendency to notice the negatives.
Practice being in the moment. Look for those things, however small, that you can be thankful for right now. There are so many positive things in every day. Just the simple fact that you are able to read this is a reminder to give thanks for the amazing gift of sight.
Did you have food to eat today? A comfortable place to live? These are blessings that many go without.
Did you have a hard time deciding what to wear? Be thankful that you have the luxury of choice.
Gratitude – Be Grateful
Once you begin to train your brain to be aware of all that you have and how blessed you are, it becomes easier for the positives to outweigh the negatives. Celebrate the positives in your life.
This will take some deliberate effort on your part. Make time throughout your day to stop and be grateful. Allow yourself the time to be happy about the good things that are part of your everyday existence.
Recognize the positives in your life and be grateful. You just might find that you have more to celebrate than you think.
